Worship Downtown

The City of Little Rock reflects the diversity of its residents in a quick survey of its houses of worship. Churches, synagogues, temples, and meetinghouses of various faith traditions are represented throughout the city.

Downtown Little Rock houses some of the oldest church structures in the city with First United Methodist Church, Christ Church Episcopal, and the Cathedral of St. Andrew in particular all dating services back to the early 1800’s. Their unique architectural presence as well as the sounds of noon time bells add to the richness of being downtown.

The role of churches and other faith traditions in the urban environment is redefining itself as city planners and leaders, architects and builders come to recognize that the heart and soul of a community is not in its tallest building…it is in the men, women and children who live there. With new high rise condominiums, the revitalization of the MacArthur Park and SoMa areas, and an exciting new momentum in downtown living, Little Rock’s urban church leaders are stepping up and stepping in to proactively have a voice in the growing need to redefine a sense of community, tradition, and social structure for those men, women and children who live and work in the downtown vicinity.

Regular worship services, social events, and opportunities for urban outreach and mission are available and growing. Events open to the community have included a Dialog on Racism at Second Baptist Church, an interfaith Taize service at First United Methodist Church, monthly art openings and musical events at Christ Church Episcopal, and interfaith holiday services at the Riverfront Park. The urban churches are working together to prepare a metro disaster relief plan and also work together on homeless outreach.
